About this calculator

Whether you're counting down to a deadline, billing for a project, tracking a contract period or counting days until a vacation, this calculator gives you every reasonable measure of the time between two dates — total days, weeks, business days (Mon–Fri), weekend days, and even total hours and minutes.

How it works

The calculator does plain calendar arithmetic. Total days is the absolute difference in days between the two dates. Total weeks is total days ÷ 7 (rounded down). Total hours and minutes are derived from total days × 24 and total days × 1440 respectively.

Business days are counted manually by walking the calendar one day at a time and excluding Saturdays and Sundays. Public holidays are NOT excluded — that's intentional because holiday calendars vary by country, region, and even employer.

If you enter the end date before the start date, the calculator computes the absolute difference rather than returning a negative number. Dates work as you'd expect across leap years, DST changes (which don't affect calendar-day arithmetic) and month boundaries.

For pure age calculations (years + months + days), use the dedicated age calculator instead — it gives you the breakdown that matches what you'd write on a passport form. This calculator is better for total counts and business-day-only counts.

Formula

total_days  = abs(end - start) / 86,400,000   (ms in a day)
total_weeks = floor(total_days / 7)
total_hours = floor(abs(end - start) / 3,600,000)
business_days = count days from start to end where day-of-week ∈ {Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri}

Examples

1 Jan 2026 to 31 Mar 2026

First quarter of 2026 spans 89 days, of which 64 are weekdays — close to the standard estimate of 63 working days per quarter.

Result: 89 days — 12 weeks — 64 business days — 26 weekend days

Three-month leave: 1 Jun to 31 Aug 2026

A 3-month summer leave covers 91 calendar days and 65 business days (excluding public holidays).

Result: 91 days — 13 weeks — 65 business days

Frequently asked questions

Does this exclude public holidays? +
No. Public-holiday calendars differ by country, state, and even employer. If you need to subtract holidays, look up your region's list and subtract them from the business-day count.
What counts as a business day? +
Monday through Friday inclusive. The calculator counts every weekday between the start and end dates, treating both endpoints as included.
How does it handle leap years? +
Correctly. JavaScript Date arithmetic accounts for 29 February, varying month lengths, and DST changes (which don't affect the date count).
Can it count time in months? +
Not in this calculator — months have variable length (28–31 days), making 'total months' ambiguous. For year+month+day breakdowns use the age calculator instead.
Does it work across time zones? +
Dates are treated as local civil dates without time-zone conversion. If you need precise hour-level results across time zones, work in UTC and adjust accordingly.
